Most people in restoration have one story about how they got into the industry.

Last week’s guest has three careers behind him before this one.

Jason Floyd spent ten years as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army, including five years at West Point and five in Germany, where he was Soldier of the Quarter six times, Soldier of the Year for all of U.S. Army Europe, and personally selected as Presidential Guard and Escort for President Bill Clinton during the 1999 US-Russia summit. After the Army, five years as a Sheriff’s Deputy in Colorado, then fourteen years as a Logistics Manager for one of the largest produce shippers in the country, before finding restoration five years ago.

Today Jason leads the commercial division at FP Property Restoration after three years running their Southwest Florida operations. In this episode, he breaks down the hardest lesson restoration taught him that none of his other careers could, why speed matters more than almost anything else in this industry, and his own take on two real problems facing restoration today: the lack of uniformity across IICRC standards, and companies failing to put real technology in the hands of their newest techs.

In this episode:

  • Jason’s path through the Army, law enforcement, and logistics before restoration
  • Being selected as Presidential Guard for President Clinton during the 1999 US-Russia summit
  • How a friend finally talked him into the restoration industry
  • The hardest lesson restoration taught him: speed
  • Why uniformity across IICRC standards matters, and what would actually fix it
  • Why technology needs to be in the hands of every tech, not just managers
  • What it actually takes to succeed in restoration without twenty years of experience or family ties
