Are you pigeonholing yourself in a market? In our recent Restoration Rundown podcast with Michelle Blevins (Cleaning & Restoration Magazine) she talks about a mistake that restoration companies, both big and small, don’t get involved with the restoration industry at all. From regional and national restoration organizations, including their respective conferences. This limits their potential tremendously. You probably heard the saying “it’s not what you know, but who you know”.

“You know, one of the things I’m surprised with are the number of companies in the industry of any size who seem to kind of like, pigeonhole themselves in their markets. I can think of even like a hundred million companies in large markets that don’t get involved with the industry at all. They’re not involved with the RIA, they’re not involved with any like, MS, I’m totally blank on it. The Mid South Cleaners Association, that’s a great one.

There’s a lot of, different organizations and ways that people can get involved in the industry or going to conferences. I mean, there are some that have never, I’ve never met a single person from these huge companies at any conference or small companies. I think those are good place to start. Get curious. Try to meet fellow restorers who have been doing it for a long time. You know, the RIA has come a really long way in the last few years, has some amazing new leadership, an amazing company that’s running it now. So they’ve come a long way. That’s a great resource to go to, and that’s full of restorers that really know their stuff, right?”
